We hear the word sound tossed around a lot in music. What is somebody’s sound? Is it identifiable? Does it stand out from the pack? Everyone wants that answer to be yes when it comes to their music. Mike Tipton and The Scoundrels have accomplished that elusive objective. We know this because of their latest release. Back to the Farm… A slower tempo song that departs from their rowdy live approach, and previous releases, but still announces itself with the same direct writing style and memorable melody that we’ve grown use to from this band…
The idea of going back to a safe and familiar place in a difficult time resonates with all of us… Tipton capitalizes on this concept with the portrait of having coffee with his parents, mending the family fence line or being welcomed home by the familiar tree line on the property.
As the lyrics deal with the freshness of a breakup, he encourages his lost love to go back to the life they had built together as he goes back to the life that built him.
Couple this with a melody and vocals that are haunting, but fitting for the situation, and you can almost see his past wrap around him like the wings of a guardian angel in a hard time as you listen to each line…
Any band can turn out the same song with a different title over and over again and call it a sound. But it’s the band that finds a way to keep showing and telling us something new within the framework of the familiar musicianship, vocals, and writing style that their fans find comforting to the ear.
Raise a glass to Mike Tipton and The Scoundrels for being one of those bands. There’s plenty of proof to those facts in their new single… Back to the farm.
